What Happened?

On a recent hike along a beautiful glacier fed stream near Kusawa Lake, a crazy thing happened. A friend of mine was crushing stuff with boulders. It is a pastime we northern men enjoy. If this sophisticated game is new to you, here is a photographic walk-through. Watch Shabba as he skillfully demonstrates the process.

First, you pick up a boulder (the larger the better) and carry it to the place with the best prospect for destruction, ie. crunching, booming, bamming, or splashing.

Hold the boulder as high in the air as you can, so as to gain as much momentum as is humanly possible.

Throw the boulder in the desired location.

Take a moment to bask in the glory of your own manliness, enjoy it, and you’re done. You can go away with a real sense of accomplishment.

The boulder throwing, while extremely fulfilling, wasn’t the crazy part of this story, however. In fact, in the Yukon this sort of thing seems to occur anytime there is more than one man gathered in the same place. The real craziness occurred after our noble demonstrator was done smashing the ice. After that, he decided to take a quick rest. Since I had taken it upon myself to keep record of all the happenings that day, I snapped a picture of him resting. After all, I thought, when you are as manly as we are, people are gonna want to to be kept in the know.

When I got home, however, and I had uploaded all the day’s photos to my computer, I scanned through the photos in chronological order as I normally do. First came the smashing, and yes, we all looked manly as ever. But then came my photo of Shabba resting, and this is when things got crazy.

What happened? I mean, do I also look like a fashion model after throwing large boulders? Do Calvin Klein ads contain subliminal messages? Am I supposed to be embarrassed for taking a photo like this? Do these things only happen with digital photography? Please help me. I need answers!

Andrew,

I've realized through your pictomation that i must curb my pre-adolesence urges. You have successfully demonstrated that once a man is 15 years past puberty, you pretty much look like a neanderthal when engaging in activites like boulder throwing. Oh cursed puberty!!

My mom was 1953 boulder tossing champion of Nagpur India.

P.s. Nice shots brotha!!
