Fishing for Photographs

I went fishing with Tony and my brother yesterday, and as Tony says, we had a bout of bad luck as we usually do. So, why exactly do I go fishing if it is usually a disaster?

I only started fishing consistently in the last few years, and the reason why I started is that it gives me a purpose to explore the Yukon. I am only motivated to do something if I can see why I should do it. With fishing there is always the purpose of getting something to eat, and that is plenty of reason for me. And just look at the sort of places fishing will take you.

Photography is also a good excuse to explore the Yukon. I wouldn’t climb a mountain just to get to the top, but I would just to take a photo. Nature photography is a lot like fishing, in fact. Often you will come home empty handed, there are short thrilling moments, and while there isn’t a meal when you get home from taking photos, uploading them to your computer can be just as fulfilling.

It is my understanding that bird watching serves the same purpose for some, and I believe it. At Kathleen River yesterday, once we came to grips with the fact that we weren’t going to catch a fish there, we started fishing for bird photos. And I have to say that good bird photos can be as elusive as any fish.

Then, on the way home from Kathleen River, we stopped at the Takhini River, and Tony caught a nice pike.

After I had lost fishing fever (what happens when you lose all hope of catching a fish), I started fishing for photographs again. That’s when I saw this fellow:

So, I didn’t get a fish, but I did catch myself a nice photo of this eagle.

If you can’t seem to get the energy to explore the great outdoors, you might want to try getting yourself a hobby like fishing, bird watching, or photography. Better still, as I learned yesterday, it is sometimes best to combine them all into one. You’re less likely to come home empty handed.

Great photos and story. You make Anthony look very handsome, almost Hemingway'esque.

I have thrown a post and linked your photos on www.fishonyukon.blogspot.com

Keep me posted on your fishing (or fishing photos) and I'll throw it on the blog.
