Far Too Long Without a Pet Photo

We recently took Taffy to the Carcross Desert, where she became possessed by the soul of a recently slaughtered chicken—or so I thought after watching her random rambunctiousness. After she ate some dirt to aid with the digestion of some foliage, however, I became absolutely sure of it.

But by the time we got home and the authories had arrived, all that remained of her odd behavior was a nervous twitch, and that only came about when they inspected a certain spot on her belly. And as if the days events weren’t strange enough already, she seemed to be actually enjoying herself.

Friday Cat Blogging: Leroy has a Twin

My cat and good buddy, Leroy, was born to a Siamese mother, and a huge tabby cat father named Musafa. He was born in Vancouver to some former Yukoners, and my sister brought him to Whitehorse several years ago. When she moved back to Vancouver, she wasn’t able to bring him with her, so Leroy has been here ever since.

To say that he is a unique cat would be an understatement, but he is apparently not the only flame-point out there to have a captivating and loveable personality. Before I introduce you to Leroy’s flame-point counterpart, I should tell you a little bit more about Leroy. He is huge (about 15 pounds) and built more like a small jaguar or bobcat than a normal domestic cat. I estimate his I.Q. to be about 85, and if he gets his mind set that he is going to do something, he is going to do it. Forget to feed him, he’ll rip a hole in the bottom of the bag of food so it can all pour out. Leave the ouside door unlatched, he’ll push it open and escape. Leave something fragile in a high place, he’ll find a way to knock it down. And he does it all just for his own personal amusement.

He is territorial. He has chased large dogs out of our yard on several occasions. I try to keep him inside most of the time, since his bravery is sure to get him in trouble, but this can be very difficult on a nice sunny day. When he does get outside, which is more often than I would like, he will keep to himself for a little while. But if I just stay outside and go about my business for a few minutes his curiosity will quickly lead him to me. Of course, that doesn’t mean he is easy to catch. If he doesn’t want to come inside, he can be very stubborn.

He comes when he is called, and will usually answer back. He enjoys wrestling and martial arts, and I have taught him everything I know about these endeavours.

But don’t let his wildness fool you, he is as sweet as a cat can get, and for a cat that weighs more than many dogs, he is very skilled in the art of snuggling. He just seems to find the perfect places to lay down, and isn’t offended by the smallest movement on my part, as some cats are apt to be.

I received an email from fellow Whitehorse resident who, after seeing some photos of Leroy, was compelled to introduce me to his equally interesting cat, Sam-I-Am. Tell me if you think that Sam-I-Am might be Leroy’s long lost brother.
…a glutton for affection, he comes when he is called and lets our 3 yr old do just about anything to him. He had been returned to the shelter by his previous owner because he was creating too many problems (opening cupboards and eating trash) which led to him developing pancreatitis (pain in the pancreas). So he is on the high class cat food - though if he doesn’t get his way he will open cupboards, chew through bags and drag food all over the house.
And the resemblence is uncanny. Click on the image to see more photos of Sam-I-Am.

Upon hearing that Leroy might have a brother in Whitehorse, I phoned my sister to inquire whether this was indeed possible. She informed me that while Leroy may have a relative in Whitehorse, this cat would have to be both female and have different coloring. Oh well, I think they are brothers in spirit, at least. Either way, we are certainly both blessed to have such crazy and engaging cats.

Friday Cat Blogging

I told myself that I wouldn’t participate in cat blogging every week. It has been two weeks since my last cat post, however, so bear with me. Cool people, tough guys, and celebrities, turn away.

Some say that pets and owners will become strikingly similar over time. Yet judging by the vigor with which Leroy keeps up on his hygiene, this must not always hold true. Of course, we are both known to sleep in the basement, so maybe we are alike after all.

Friday Cat Blogging

It has come to my attention that Friday is the day to post about your cat. As I think that my cat is the best cat on earth, I was more than happy to hear this. You may be thinking it is awfully feminine for a twenty-something dude to be posting about his cat. But my cat is a man’s cat.

He chases large dogs, beats up on our other cat just for fun, is involved in every household project, and loves to get his back scratched. If that’s not a man’s cat, I don’t know what is.
